Update

I spoke with my site supervisor about my plans for the action research. She and I started off discussing some areas of concerns with our campus and some possible areas that were in need for more parental involvement. I shared with her my interest about parent involvement within our classrooms and the affect of student academic improvement.  She agreed to look at the effects of parental involvement and accountability in the daily work and test in the classroom environment. We talked about programs that we currently have in place such as math night, reading night and science night, which is producing good number of parent participation. We talked about possibly hosting something on a smaller scale within the classroom and based on the results becoming school wide. I shared with my site supervisor about possibly offering incentives for the students who convince their parents to come into the classroom and be apart for a day. I would like the parents to become co-teachers in a sense so that they are able to see what it takes as teacher to make sure their child is becoming successful. I hope to find a solution to help to improve student achievement within our campus and possibly our district through increased parental involvement.

  1. You mentioned in your research action plan about your ideas for having parents get involved but did you have any ideas of things you would do to activate their interest, such as newsletter, calls, asking for help. I know a challenge might be parents working or having small children at home. On pintrest I think i saw a list of ideas to have parents help at home was really clever to get them involved when they were not able to come to the school. I hope that helps get you started.

  2. Something we found successful at my school to increase parent participation during workshops was to offer babysitting services. Our P.E. teachers and paraprofessionals were very kind to offer these services. This was not an easy task, a great amount of time was taken to organize and plan activities for all ages. Their hard work did prove to be quite beneficial as we do have more parent participation when we are able to provide this service for them. Best wishes with your research.
